MARTI'S MISSION
Radio Martí: 30 years serving the people of Cuba
Today Radio, TV Martí and martinoticias.com produce multimedia content that is used on the web 24/7, on around-the-clock radio broadcasts, and daily TV newscasts.
The work of the Martis centers around promoting freedom and democracy by providing objective information to the Cuban population that would otherwise be unavailable. It's mission is to empower the Cuban people to make their own educated decisions about their future without coercion. The Martis produce content that is relevant to the daily lives of Cubans, the work of human rights activists, journalists, and dissidents. It reports on human rights violations, the actions of the dictatorship, and the space that the civil society continues to create.
Cuba has one of the world's most restrictive media environments. The island nation consistently ranks in the bottom 10 of Freedom House's Freedom of the Press Index. The Committee to Protect Journalists refers to Cuba as one of the worst countries in which to be a blogger. Reporters Without Borders ranked it #169 (out of 180) in its 2014 Press Freedom Index and considers the Castro administration an “Enemy of the Internet.” It is in this environment that the Office of Cuba Broadcasting operates the Martis.
